Tempest
Tempest are Duncan Davidson, Celia Briar and Pat Higgins Tempest are a new band based in Wellington, New Zealand. Tempest play Irish / Scottish traditional music on fiddle, accordion, flute and harp.
The heart of the band is the fiddle / flue / accordion trio which is skillfully backed by Celia on harp. The music ranges from energetic jigs and reels to slower arranged pieces. To balance the fast-paced tunes they feature Celia on harp leading the band through O'Carolan pieces and slow Scottish airs. The band enjoys arranging these using harmonies and counterpoint to create a rich tonal palette. In addition tot he instrumental pieces the band performs traditonal songs from Ireland, Scotland and England.
Celia Briar began playing Celtic harp in 1977 when she was still living in Lancashire UK. She was active in the traditional music scene in northwest England in the 1980s. In 1983 she was the winner of the prestigious All-Ireland Fleadh title for harp. Celia has lived in New Zealand since 1988. She plays regularly for weddings, music festivals and concerts, and in the past year has done harp workshops at several festivals in Australia and New Zealand.
Duncan Davidson is from Upper Hutt in New Zealand. He is a virtuoso on several instruments. He can play flute, accordion, whistle and bouzouki equally well. In the band he uses mainly accordion, as part of the box / flute / fiddle trio.
Pat Higgins is a self-taught wooden flute player from Ireland with a passion for Irish traditonal music. He has been a stalwart of the Wellington music scene playing in bands and now leading a regular Irish session. He co-founded the Celtic Flute School of New Zealand. | | | |
